Electrocardiograms

As your pet’s trusted doctor, if we are recommending an ECG, we understand that you are concerned. Please understand that this doesn’t necessarily mean your pet has a serious cardiac issue. An ECG may be recommended for a number of reasons including:

No, your pet’s ECG is not painful at all! During the procedure, we will make sure your pet is as comfortable as possible. They will be lying down, and we will gently attach electrodes to their elbows, knees, and/or chest wall. The electrical impulses from the electrocardiogram are painless.

A pet ECG detects electrical problems in the heart, including arrhythmias and irregular heart rates. The test only takes a few minutes, and your pet will never be alone. Results are virtually immediate. If we do have any serious concerns, we may recommend you see a veterinary cardiologist. The electrocardiogram can also be used while pets are under anesthesia as well to give us a real-time view of their heart rate and rhythm.
